U-M Finance Professor David Brophy Receives MVCA’s Above and Beyond Award for His Contributions to Michigan’s Venture Capital Industry and Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

Professor of Finance David Brophy, director of the University of Michigan Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance, was presented with the Michigan Venture Capital Association’s 2016 Above and Beyond Award at the MVCA annual awards dinner on November 2 in Detroit.

The prestigious award recognizes Brophy’s remarkable contributions over 50 years to Michigan’s venture industry and entrepreneurial community through his multifaceted role as an educator, investor, advisor, trustee, director and author. The honor also pays tribute to his visionary leadership in founding the Michigan Growth Capital Symposium, which has become the Midwest’s and the nation’s premier venture fair. The annual event connects angel and venture capital investors with entrepreneurs and founders of high-growth technology, life-sciences and advanced-manufacturing companies who are seeking early stage funding for their businesses. This coming spring, the MGCS will observe its 36th year when it convenes on May 16-17.

At the awards dinner, MVCA Board Chairman Tony Grover thanked Brophy for his important contributions to the VC community. A short video presented accolades from Brophy’s long-time colleagues, friends and former students, many of whom are now members of Michigan’s venture community and attended the awards ceremony.

Brophy, in receiving the honor, expressed his pride for the MVCA and the professionalism of its tireless work to advance and expand Michigan’s venture industry and entrepreneurial ecosystem. “The sense of this community giving back and helping companies progress is remarkable,” he said.
