Biography

Dr. Adriaens is the Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy in the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. Dr. Adriaens is a Co-Developer of the KeyStone Compact. He co-founded Water Risk Analytics. His current work focuses on CleanTech innovation and entrepreneurship. His consulting experience with multi-national companies such as Dow, Alcoa, Holcim, and G.E. emphasizes industrial sustainability issues, including site remediation pollution prevention and new business development. He is past-President of the Association of Environmental Science and Engineering Professors. His expertise is based on 25 years of fundamental and applied technology research as a Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, 12 years as an in-house Strategic Consultant for LimnoTech , and three years as an instructor and advisor with the Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. He holds a primary appointment in Civil Engineering, with joint appointments in the School for Natural Resources and Environment, the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and the Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. Dr. Adriaens also has an appointment as the Chaired Professor of Entrepreneurship at Sichuan University, China. He serves on Science Advisory Boards of Environmental Science and Technology Research Centers in United States, Germany, Taiwan, and China and on Advisory panels of a number of Environmental Technology Development companies. He is a Director at CleanTech Acceleration Partners and a Director at the Watershed Capital Group (Atlanta), focused on Impact Investments. He has 20-year career focused on validating laboratory-based bioremediation, environmental sensing and green building technologies in the field. He has 20 years of research and field validation experience in the clean technology space involving industrial partners and multiple academic institutions with over $22 million of funding from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the United States Navy, the United States DOD/DOE/EPA Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP), and industry. He teaches courses on Business Models, Entrepreneurial Business Fundamentals, CleanTech Venture Assessment, and Sustainability Finance. Dr. Adriaens holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, an M.S., and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Gent, Belgium, and completed his postdoctoral work at Stanford University.
