Biography

Prof. David J. Brophy, Ph.D. has been a Director, Center for Venture Capital & Private Equity Finance at Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Endowment Arm since 1992, where Prof. Brophy assists emerging and mid-size companies. Prof. Brophy is a Founding Member of the Journal of Business Venturing Editorial Board, The Journal of Private Equity Finance and the International Venture Capital Journal. Prof. Brophy served as an Executive Officer of Ally Financial Inc. Prof. Brophy advised several institutional and corporate investors in their private equity finance activities. Prof. Brophy joined the finance faculty of U-M in 1968. Prof. Brophy is a Professor of Finance and a Member of the Finance and Entrepreneurial Studies Faculty at The Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, where he teaches courses in entrepreneurial finance, corporate valuation, venture capital and both domestic and international private equity and finance. Prof. Brophy served as a Chief Financial Officer of Asia Automotive Acquisition Corp. since June 2005 and served as its Chief Accounting Officer. Prof. Brophy served as an Advisor of River Place Financial Corporation. He also serves as Director of the University of Michigan Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance. He also is Founding Director of two leading international private equity conferences: the University of Michigan Growth Capital Symposium (venture capital-oriented) and the University of Michigan Global Private Equity Conference (corporate growth and buyout oriented). He has been a consultant to a variety of government agencies in the U.S., Australia, France, India and Russia and has served on the Governor’s Commission on High Technology in Michigan. He is active in the development of policy regarding the University’s role in technology transfer, entrepreneurial activity, and venture capital investment. Dr. Brophy has also served as consultant to the State of Michigan Task Force on Venture Capital. He serves as an Advisor at Kyyba Ventures. He served as a Director of Nighthawk Radiology Services, LLC since 2004 until December 22, 2010. Prof. Brophy serves as a Director and Member of Business Advisory Board of BioStar Ventures. He has been Trustee at Victory Portfolios – Victory S&P 500 Index Fund and its various funds in found complex. He serves as a Trustee of Altarum Institute. He serves as a Director of Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Endowment Arm. He served as a Trustee of various funds of Munder Fund complex. He serves as a Member of Advisory Board of Compass Technology Partners and Granite Hall Partners, Inc. Prof. Brophy has been a Member of the Advisory Board at Nantucket Multi Managers, LLC since May 2004. Prof. Brophy is a Director, investor and/or an Advisor to emerging technology-based companies, banks, money market funds and financial services firms including Munder Capital Management, Continental Capital and General Motors Acceptance Corporation Wholesale Auto Receivables Corporation. Prof. Brophy serves as a Director of Central Originating Lease Trust II. He served as a Director of River Place Financial Corporation and Asia Automotive Acquisition Corp. since June 2005. He served as a Director of Sagient Research Systems, Inc., from February 2002 to March 2003 and NightHawk Radiology Holdings, Inc. from 2004 to December 2010. He served as a Director of Tongxin International, Ltd. from June 2005 to April 9, 2013. He is the leading Researcher in the interaction of finance and entrepreneurship and initiated the process of information surveying for the National Venture Capital Association. Prof. Brophy is active internationally in the field of venture capital and private equity finance, entrepreneurship and the funding of fast growth oriented companies. His current research is focused upon the study of private equity finance in a global setting, the venture capital investment and private placement process, and entrepreneurial finance. He has conducted in-depth research on venture capital. Dr. Brophy’s consulting activities in the public and private sectors include his advisory work with funds such as Compass Technology Partners, Plymouth Ventures and Bio-Star Ventures, as well as with various government agencies in the United States, Australia and France. He has twice won the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies Research Award. He is the Author of a book titled “Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development” and has published a large number of research papers in this and other aspects of finance. Prof. Brophy has published extensive research on venture capital and private equity finance. He has written extensively on venture capital and entrepreneurialism. Prof. Brophy holds a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, an M.B.A. from the University of Detroit and B.A. from St. Francis Xavier University.
